Expressive Functionalities - The Functionality and Aesthetic of PETG 3D Print Facades

MAS Architecture & Digital Fabrication - Fall Trimester 2023

This research investigated printing a series of facade panels using ABB gantry robotic arms, the design in which integrated both thermal insulation and aesthetic. In this project, several combinations of different facade patterns and inner cavity designs were applied to examine the U-value of each panel. The optimal solution was developed in a final demonstrator, consisting of multi-panels, which are 1:1 facade mock-ups roughly measuring 2m x 2m. The objective of this research was to design and fabricate 3D printed facade panels with thermoplastic polyester that seamlessly integrates thermal function and aesthetic considerations into an unified mono-material composition.
